It was only a fishing village until the middle of the 12th century when it grew in importance after coming into the possession of Bishop Absalon, who fortified it in 1167. The first two have a mixed 200-300-year history and originated through an amalgamation of the university collections and various private collections.
Other natural history museums are the state-owned Jagt- og Skovbrugsmuseum (Museum of Hunting and Forestry) in Hørsholm (1942), the local authority Zoologisk Museum (Zoological Museum) in Svendborg (1935) and the geological museums of Gram, Fur and Fakse.
