Founded two centuries ago, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium hold some twenty thousand paintings
, sculptures and drawings. Located in Brussels, they consist of the Ancient Art Museum (XV - XVII century),

Silvius Brabo
Until the 17th century, Antwerp was often written as 'Handwerpen' [ in translation: throwing a hand ]. And no
wonder, because of an ancient legend it had to be written that way. According to this legend, the
Scheldebocht [ bend in the river Scheldt ] was dominated by the giant Druoon Antigoon at the beginning of the
current calender. He took a heavy toll from each passing shipmaster. Those who refused to pay, he cut off a hand.
But this ended when the Roman soldier, Silvius Brabo, killed the giant, and cut off a hand of the giant and threw it into the Scheldt. Hence: Handwerpen. The H disappeared, Antwerp remained.
See the bronze fountain (1887) in his memory at the Market [a work of the Antwerp sculptor Jef Lambeaux].
Sinjoor The nickname "Sinjoor" that the people of Antwerp with pride, dates from the 16th (Golden) century, when
the city was one of the most important cultural and economic centers in the world.
In the eyes of whether or not envious outsiders the many inhabitants les a true gentlemen's lives: courtly and
self-consciously, as Sinjeur '(after the then-important Spanish: Señor). The Spanish language disappeared, the Sinjoor remained.
