Geografisch reicht der Bregenzerwald von der Weissach nahe der Grenze zum Allgäu im Norden bis zum Hochtannberg- und Arlberg-Gebiet im Süden. Der nördliche Landesteil zeigt sich hügelig, gegen Süden zu wird das Tal enger, die Berge steigen steiler an.

Zu den Hofsteiggemeinden gehören die Kommunen Lauterach, Schwarzach, Kennelbach, Wolfurt.at, Buch und Bildstein. Alle diese Gemeinden liegen zwischen der Landeshauptstadt Bregenz und der Messestadt Dornbirn im Rheintal, nur wenige Minuten vom Bodenseeufer entfernt.

Von drei Seiten umgeben über 2000 m hohe Berge das Kleinwalsertal. Weder Durchgangsverkehr noch Lärm stören die intakte und weitestgehend unberührte Natur.
