The city is located on the banks of the Salzach river, at the northern boundary of the Alps.

  Benedictine monastery of St. Peter
St. Peter in Salzburg was founded by Saint Rupert during his 696 mission in the southeastern Alps and is therefore considered one of the oldest monasteries in Germany. St. Peter is a monastery of the Benedictines in Salzburg in Austria. See Die Benediktiner im Deutschen Sprachraum.
  Fortress Hohensalzburg
The Hohensalzburg Fortress, built in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard, considerably enlarged by Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach (1495-1519) is the largest completely preserved fortress in central Europe.

The St. Peter's Cemetery is adjacent to the cemetery of the monastery Nonnberg the oldest Christian cemetery in Salzburg. The place was already used in late Roman Juvavum as a burial site.
