  Eisenstadt-Umgebung   -   District

  Tourist Board Eisenstadt
The capital of Burgenland is situated at the foot of the Leitha Mountains. The town of 14,000 inhabitants is one of the smaller capitals in the Austrian federation. Eisenstadt certainly lives up to the saying "the best things come in small packages". The former residence of the Esterházy princes has a lot to offer to its visitors.
Some highlights of any visit to Eisenstadt are the Esterházy Palace, the Haydn Church (also known as "Bergkirche"), St. Martin's Cathedral or the Palace Park, the park adjacent to the Esterházy Palace.

History Burgenland

  History of Burgenland

  History of Eisenstadt
The Latin document mentions a "Capella sancti Martini de minore Mortin", that is a chapel consecrated to St. Martin in "Little Martin", or as it was called later in German "little Mertesdorff". It was a small village of little interest that probably consisted of said chapel and a few houses. At the end of the 13th until about the middle of the 14th century the city was owned by the Gut-Keled family and called Mortunzzabou in 1296, Zabemortun in 1300.

  Haydn House
When he got promoted to conductor in 1766, Haydn bought this house and lived there with his wife Aloisia Keller until 1778.   Haydn and Eisenstadt are inseparable. From 1761 on, Haydn worked as conductor for the Esterházy court for more than 40 years. Numerous furniture items and original instruments - everything from a hammer piano from the year 1780 to the organ table that was originally in the Bergkirche - make this collection a true feast for all senses.
