Destinations : Mayerhofn, Austrian Tyrol & Selva and Dolomites. The attractive village of Mayerhofn lies near the head of the Zillertal valley in Austria's beautiful Tyrol. It is a
compact linear village surrounded by majestic mountains on all sides, with cable cars reaching up to the
surrounding alpine pastures. It has everything an alpine resort should have - excellent restaurants, cafes,
bars, shops of all kinds and all the important services such as banks and ATMs. To the south are the Zillertal
Alps, rising to over 11,000 feet at the Grosse Murchner and Grosse Loffler peaks. To the west the cable
takes you to the lower slopes of the 9,000 ft. Rastkogel in the Tuxer Alps, whilst to the east is the Gerlos
group rising to the 10,800 ft. Reichenspitze. The four main side valleys also have cables and chair lifts to
delightful easier alpine walks. The valley has excellent train (including the quaint Zillertal steam trains) and bus links to assist in getting to and from the hiking trailheads.

Austria (Rough Guide Travel Guides) - by Rob Humphreys
It's the spectacular, snowcapped mountains of regions like the Tyrol that provide the most familiar images of
Austria – a landscape of jagged peaks and rampaging rivers, giving way to green pastures studded with
onion-domed churches. Yet Austria is by no means all alpine vistas: the country stretches across central
Europe for some 700km, from the shores of the Bodensee in the west to the edge of the flat Hungarian plain
in the east. Far removed from the archetype are the wetlands and reed beds of Burgenland, and the dramatic sequence of stopes that carve their way up the Erzberg in Styria.

History of Austria
Independent from Bavaria: 1156
Austria's History - WikipediA After being conquered by the Romans, Huns, Lombards, Ostrogoths, Bavarii and Franks, Austria was under
the rule of the Babenbergs from the 10th to the 13th century. The Babenbergs were then succeeded by the Habsburgs, whose line continued to govern Austria until the 20th century.
Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany in 1938 (the Anschluss). After the defeat of the Nazis, the Allies
occupied Austria at the end of World War II until 1955, when the country again became a fully independent republic under the condition that it remained neutral ......
The Decline and Fall of the Habsburg Empire, 1815-1918 - by Alan Sked
A new and revised edition of Alan Sked's groundbreaking book which examines how the Habsburg Empire survived the revolutionary turmoil of 1848.
'The Year of Revolutions', saw the whole of Europe convulsed in turmoil and revolt. Yet the Habsburg Empire
survived. As state after state succumbed to the violent winds of change that were sweeping the continent.
How did the Habsburg Empire survive? How was the army able hold together while the rest of the empire
collapsed in civil war, and how was it able to seize the political initiative In this new edition, Alan Sked reflects
on the changed understanding of the period which resulted from the first appearance of this book, and widens the discussion to look at the Habsburg Empire alongside the decline of the Russian and German
Empires, arguing that it is possible to understand their decline from a broad European perspective, as
opposed to the overly narrow focus of recent explanations. Alan Sked makes us look at familiar events with
new eyes in this radical, vigorously written classic which is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of nineteenth-century Europe.

Rethinking Vienna 1900 (Austrian History, Culture & Society S.) - by Steven Beller (Editor)
Fin-de-siecle Vienna remains a central event in the birth of this century's modern culture. Our understanding
of what happened in those key decades in Central Europe at the turn of the century has been shaped in the
last years by an historiography presided over by Carl Schorske's Fin-de-siecle Vienna and the model of the
relationship between politics and culture which emerged from his work and that of his followers. Recent
scholarship, however, has begun to question the main paradigm of this school, i.e. the "failure of liberalism."
This volume reflects not only a whole range of the critiques but also offers alternative ways of understanding
the subject, most notably through the concept of "critical modernism" and the integration of previously
neglected aspects such as the role of marginality, of the market and of the larger Central European and
European context. As a result this volume offers novel ideas on a subject that is of unending fascination and never fails to captivate the western imagination.
Paperback 256 pages (November 1, 2001); Publisher: Berghahn Books
