On the west side of the island, near Lowertown, divers and snorkelers alike can explore partially sunken warehouses and the old city wall just a short swim from the shore. There are many shipwrecks here which were laid to rest over 200 years earlier. They are now completely corralized but still offer a chance to find an undiscovered piece of history such as a cannonball, clay pipe or even one of the famed blue glass trading beads that were said to be used to purchase Manhattan.

It is hard to imagine that this small, sleepy but historic island in the Dutch Caribbean was once one of the busiest of the 18th century. Saint Eustatius, referred to locally as "Statia" and known as "the Golden Rock", boasts some of the best diving to be found in the western hemisphere. Thrilling deep dives, historical and modern (one only sank in October 2003) shipwrecks, artefacts, a breathtaking natural coral reef and coral encrusted lava flows offer you endless possibilities. As for marine life, Statia offers a full complement of Caribbean reef fish and coral, but the creatures that always have everyone talking are the large numbers of turtles, Sting Rays and the rare Flying Gurnard.

History of Saint Eustace

In 1636 St. Eustace was claimed by the Netherlands, and despite the occasional invasion since then has remained under Dutch sovereignty since. It is named after the legendary Catholic saint Eustace.
The citizens of Sint Eustatius take pride in being the first "nation" to recognize the United States, having fired an official salute to the visiting American ship Andrew Doria in 1776.

  Fortifications of St. Eustatius
St. Eustatius was a very small, yet valuable island to colonial empires. Its position in the Caribbean, along shipping routes between Europe and the New World, made it a prime location for a trade port. Naturally this lead to serious military concerns, due to the supplies, both legal and illegal, it funneled to various nations. This role was especially crucial to the rebelling factions in North America , and so "St. Eustatia" or "Statia", as it was usually called then, played a vital part in the American Revolution.

  Carnival
Carnival is the main event of the year and takes place for ten days starting late July until early August. It is very similar to other Caribbean carnivals with a Pyjama Jump-up in the early morning and Carnival Queen and Calypso Competition culminating in the burning of King Momo, the spirit of the carnival.
