Honshu is mountainous and volcanic. The highest peak is the active volcano Mount Fuji at 3,776 m. There are many rivers, including the Shinano River, the longest river of Japan.

Fukuchiyama is located about 25 km inland from the Sea of ​​Japan on the southern end of the Fukuchiyama Valley and surrounded by mountains in the south, west and east. See City of Fukuchiyama
  Hiroshima [ Chugoku ]
The largest city in the Chūgoku region of western Honshu. Hiroshima was founded on the river delta coastline of the Seto Inland Sea in 1589 by the powerful warlord Mōri Terumoto. Hiroshima is for many people the core objective of the first military attack on the 6th August 1945. After rebuilding in 1949 Hiroshima has developed into an important industrial center. In a bay before Hiroshima lies the island of Miyajima with the Itsukushima Shrine on stilts. In the water before it stands a torii [a gate painted in cinnabar], one of the most photographed landmarks in Japan. See City of Hiroshima.

Home to the great Izumo Shrine, the second most holy Shinto Shrine in Japan.
  Kawasaki [ Kanto region ]
Kawasaki is on the right bank of the River Tama, between Tokyo in the northeast and Yokohama to the southwest. The Port of Kawasaki is one structural unit, together with the ports of Tokyo and Yokohama. See City of Kawasaki.
  Kobe [ Kansai region ]   -   Kobe    -   sixth-largest city in Japan
Located on the southern side of Honshu. Kobe is one of the busiest harbours for maritime trade, being ranked 1st in size in the country ,after merging with Osaka's port, as well as one of the largest in the world. See City of Kobe

The historic city Kurashiki is located to the west of Okayama Prefecture, on the Takahashi River, on the coast of the Inland Sea. Around it the Bikan Historic District, one of Japan's largest and most beautiful historic areas. See City of Kurashiki 
  Kyoto [ Kansai region ]
Kyoto is the former capital of Japan [ from 794-1869 seat of the imperial court of Japan ]. 14 temples and Shinto shrines, together with three others in the neighboring cities of Uji and Otsu, are declared UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu) in 1994. Kyoto, with its 1,600 Buddhist temples, 400 Shinto shrines, palaces and gardens was bombed in the Second World War out of respect for that and is one of the best preserved cities in Japan.   Nagoya [ Chubu region ]
Center of the third largest Japanese metropolitan region. The city of Nagoya was already known as a trading center  in the Middle Ages. In the city lies the Atsuta Shrine, known as the second most important shrine of Imperial Japan. In addition to the more than 4,000 archaeological and historic artifacts linked to the history of Japan, it houses the divine sword of Kusanagi, one of the three imperial regalia. See City of Nagoya.

Osaka is the third largest city in Japan and located at the place where the Yodo River flows into Osaka Bay. Kyoto and Nara, with nearby Osaka, is the cradle of Japanese culture and people.
Osaka is not only one of the most important industrial centers of Japan, but also one of the most important ports. In the city, the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, a tourist attraction with the largest aquarium in the world. See City of Osaka.

After the tsunami, the city of Rikuzentakata, population 24.700, in northern Iwate Prefecture, looked as if it was submerged in muddy water with no traces of houses or buildings.
  Saitama [ Kanto region ]
  Sendai
Located in the narrow strip between the Pacific and the mountains and is the largest city in the Tohoku region. Sendai is one of the most important stations on the JR Tohoku Shinkansen line. On 11 March 2011 an earthquake that caused a tsunami in the coastal region of the city, took place 130 kilometers off the city in the sea before the coast. Of Wakabayashi district, which extends directly to the coast, only a swampy wasteland with murky, waist-deep water was left.   Arima Onsen   -    Japan's most famous hot spring resort
Near Kobe in beautiful surroundings. Arima is the oldest spa area in Japan. Arima hot springs are natural ones that have been used since ancient times when people had no skills of digging in the ground.
It has two kinds of springs. One is kinsen [ gold spring ], which has water colored yellow-brown from iron and salt. The other is ginsen [ silver spring ], which is colorless and contains radium and carbonate. Power plant in Fukushima I
Fukushima I is the first Nuclear Power Plant of the energy supply company Tōkyō Denryoku [TEPCO]. It consists of six blocks. The first two boiling water reactors as well as block 6 were built by General Electric, Block 3 and 5 by Toshiba and Block 4 by Hitachi. The power plant is located 250 km north of Tokyo, close to the sea. Twelve miles away is the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant II.

  Tokaido / Tōkaidō [ Eastern Sea Road }
Historic road that connected Osaka and Kyoto with Edo (now Tokyo) in Japan. The Tokaido was 488 km long and ran mostly along the Pacific [ i.e., southern ] coast. The route of the Tokaido is now followed by a national highway and two important rail lines, one being a line of the high-speed Shinkansen.
